“Peel and Steal” – Van Owners Beware!

If you are the owner of a van thPeel and Stealen you may be interested to read that a number of such vehicles have been broken into by thieves without the use of any tools. Apparently some vans are being broken into by one or more persons by using their fingers and knees to partly peel down either the rear or side doors that gain access into the back of the vehicle where the likes of tools are often stored.

This type of break in is referred to as either “peel and steal” or “peel and seek” and is happening on quite a regular basis.

Once the door has been partially peeled open the thief is then able to shine a torch into the rear of the van to check if there is anything in the vehicle worth stealing. If there is then they will do what is necessary to gain access. As you are no doubt aware, tradespeople regularly carry very expensive tools and equipment as well as supplies of stock that may have a value of several thousand pounds.Vehicle Security

Van owners may wish to get some advice about whether there are any additional security measures that they can take to reduce the possibility of being broken into in this way. If it is practical and safe to do so, they may also wish to consider parking their van in such a way that the doors referred to above cannot easily be opened by a thief. Manufacturers of vans are no doubt aware of the problem and, if necessary, are hopefully looking into ways to make their vans more secure.

Over 4 Million Vans On Roads In The UK

For the first time on record the number of vans on roads in the UK has exceeded the 4 million mark. Apparently, as at the end of 2015, there were 4,007,331 vans on our roads based upon the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Motorparc Vehicles in Use (UK) data.

This was an increase of 4.3% last year, with the previous figure as at the end of 2014 having stood at 3,842,017 vans. In 2013 there was a 2.1% rise to 3,706,351.

VanIt is also interesting to note that last year there were in excess of 370,000 new vans registered in the UK. Furthermore, in the first quarter of this year there was a rise of 1.2% in the number of new vans being registered.

One of the reasons why there has been an increase in demand for new vans is believed to be due to the growth seen in the number of purchases being made online by the public in the UK. Whether a shopper is buying a new shirt via the Internet or ordering their weekly shopping from one of the major supermarkets all these items have to be delivered. In fact it is estimated that, on an annual basis within the UK, some 45 billions miles are driven by vans.

Another interesting statistic is that by far the most popular colour of van in the UK is a white oneVan with those accounting for 57% of such vehicles. In second place is silver with 11.4% and in third place is blue with a 9% share. Of course, we are sure that it does not surprise you to read that the white van is the most popular colour chosen by the owners of such vehicles.

Apparently, if all vans in the UK were parked one behind the other they would cover a distance equating to 28 times the AI’s length.

Ten Per Cent Of Registered New Vehicles Are Vans

Have you by any chance happened to notice that there are more new vans appearing on our road system here in the UK than ever before? Well, your observations would tie in with information produced by the Department of Transport.

Apparently, in 2013, vans accounted for 10% of all new vehicles that were registered in the UK making them a very popular choice for the business user. Over the last 5 years, the new van market has grown by 5% in respect of registrations and from 2012 to 2013 a staggering 3% rise.

The data also makes interesting reading as far as which parts of the country have seen the most new van registrations. In top spot, we have Darlington up in the north of England. In 2013, there were 611 new vans registered in respect of every 1,000 residents living in Darlington. Over the whole of the UK, the average was only 68 new van registrations per 1,000 residents.Van Insurance

In second place, there is a significant drop to 370 new van registrations per 1,000 residents and that is in Slough. In third place, we have Swindon with 204 new van registrations per 1,000 people.

If you live in Coventry, you will have witnessed a rise of 293% in new vans being registered whilst in Bristol it was only 13%.

It has also been revealed that it can pay to try to negotiate about the price a dealer wants for a new van. An average saving of £1,210 could be made off the price of a new van if someone is prepared to start negotiating about the price. An impressive 10% of purchasers of new vans were able to get as much as £3,000 plus knocked off the original price.

It probably will not surprise you to read that it tends to be the older van driver who will endeavor to get a few pounds off the price. The research revealed that over half, 54% to be precise, of those aged 35 to 54 tried to get a reduction in the asking price yet only 24% of those in the 18 to 34 years of age bracket did the same.

So, the new van market is certainly extremely buoyant with numerous sizes and shapes of new vans on our roads. No doubt, over a period of time, this will filter through to the second-hand van marketplace.
